Personal Development Beyond Therapy: A 5-Level Path to Self Discovery

For Those who Have Read the Books, Done the Work and Are Still Searching for the Real Thing

Level 1: Self Immersion

The Lost State (The Amnesic Void)

“I don’t know who I am, Im just reacting to everything”

In this state you are completely submerged in the noise of the world. You feel as if your feelings are ‘you’. If you are feeling angry you will act as if you ARE the anger. People apologize and say ” Sorry, I was angry”. The “I” or sense of self is contained by the feeling, controlled by it.

You move through life with a lowered sense of self, often acting in automatic, ‘ornery’ or reactive ways.

There is a deep, Total Disconnect- you are unaware that a deeper self is waiting beneath the surface.

This is the “Trance” of the Play. You are the character, not the observer. There is a being contained within- like the genie in the lamp!

The shift begins when you realize you are not your feelings. The first spark of awareness: There is a “you” behind the reaction.

The Key Question: Can I distinguish that my feelings are in my body and are not me, the observer of those feelings.

True North Posts Relating to Level One

Immersion

The state of immersion is unpleasant. One feels a lowered sense of esteem, but a sort of ornery version of yourself......

Fishbowls

I like the concept of fishbowls as it gets across the notion that we are ‘swimming’ in something that is so basic that we take it for granted.

Moods

The feelings are within our body and once activated take over our usually conscious self. We also lose sight of our presence.

True North Systemic Skills for Level One

Kinaesthetic Anchoring

This is the skill of being aware that you are distinct from you feelings and that the feeling needs to be identified in the body.

The 3 Waves of Feelings

Most people in immersion do not realize that they (the ego self) are being merged with feelings at different levels, captive of them.

Experiential Awareness Retention (EAR)

There are different levels of awareness some are very confronting. EAR helps you become aware of the distortions affecting you & move ahead.

Level 2: Identity Fusion

The Sociological Mask. The Constructed Self

The Feeling: “I am who they need me to be. If I stop performing, I cease to exist.” You live to the prescription!

What is Identity Fusion?  To identify means “as if that is me”. In this stage, the raw confusion of Level 1 is temporarily solved by adopting a persona. You fuse your sense of self with external labels: your job title, your relationship status, your political party, your “spiritual brand,” or the expectations of your family.

You are no longer lost in the void; you are lost in the mask. You believe the mask is so tight that it is your skin. When the mask is challenged, you don’t just feel embarrassed; you feel existential annihilation.

The Trap: The tragedy of Level 2 is that it feels like progress. You have structure. You have a name. You have a story. But it is a story written by others, edited by algorithms, and performed for an audience you don’t truly know.

The Key Question: “If I stripped away my job, my partner, my achievements, and my reputation… would anything remain?”

Is This the Right Line?

The Herd

"Extended from Chomsky's 'herd' concept: identifying with political groups, teams, and ideologies as if they were 'you'. When the herd bleeds, you feel wounded.".....

Modernity

Modernity refers to a particular era in human history. It is an era characterised by scientific thought (rather than metaphysical

Prescription Living

In terms of the Herd mentality comes the idea that we should defer all of our decision making to some expert of higher authority. Political correctness is another side of this mentality. We should do that which is seen as the right thing to do......

The Alchemy of Worth

Your true Worth is the 'Spirit' hidden within the 'Matter' of your roles. The Worth Alchemy is the procedure to find it. Like turning lead to gold, you learn to see the fusion, apply the fire of awareness, and distill the pure Essence of Being from the noise of the world.

The Descripting Procedure

The 'March of Modernity' handed you a script: 'Act like this, be that.' The De-Scripting Method is the skill to tear up the script. It’s the practice of recognizing the lines, stopping the recitation, and realizing: 'I am not the character: I am the playwright.

Dis-identification

In terms of the Herd mentality comes the idea that we must defer to experts and fit in to avoid isolation. Political correctness is merely another mask of this fear. Dis-identification means facing the fear of treading the unknown path only you can, the truly individuated one.

Level 3: Mind Fusion

The Exiled Self – The Trap of Analysis

The Feeling: “I am the one watching the thoughts. If I can just understand the pattern, I’ll finally be free.”

What is Mind Fusion? After realizing the social mask (Level 2) is a construct, the seeker turns inward. They start observing their thoughts, analyzing their trauma, and dissecting their psyche. They believe the mind is the tool that will set them free.

But in Mind Fusion, you are identified with your thoughts. Before you were the feelings now you are the thoughts. You don’t just watch the mind; you become a prisoner in the loop of “watching the watcher.” You fuse with the process of seeking, mistaking the map for the territory.

The Trap: This stage feels like deep spiritual work. You have books, journals, and insights. But the “seeker” is still in the driver’s seat. The mind has simply put on a new costume: the “spiritual seeker.” You are still trying to solve yourself, but the problem is the solver itself.

The Key Question: “Who is the one watching? And can the watcher ever truly be free if it is still trying to watch?”

True North Posts Relating to Level Three

Identity

I like the idea that identifying is to say ‘as if that’s me’. Your team loses and you feel bad, as if that is you. You identify with your car, perfume, song, partner, house and so on ‘as if that is you’. Well it isn’t! ....

The Videotape

The video is that collection of images, attitudes, conditioning, upbringing & any other type of brain bending that the world may have caused in us. Like the moods dialogue it is mostly a process affecting the bio-mind ......

Moods

The feelings are within our body and once activated take over our usually conscious self. We also lose sight of our presence.

True North Systemic Skills for Level Three

The Frankenstein Protocol

The ego tries to stitch together a self through thoughts, This is the illusion of a person trying to build their own soul. The Protocol is the skill of spotting this construction: “I am not the creature I am building; I am the awareness watching the stitches.”

Mood Hijack Awareness

Moods are biochemical films that project false danger, temporarily "borrowing" your self and shrinking your sovereignty. When fear activates, the mind argues you are in danger, distorting your reality. You stop being the actor in the movie and become the witness who knows, "I am not this fear; I am the one watching."

Creative Progressive Responding (CPR)

When a partner is hijacked by a negative mood, empathy must come before insight. CPR is the skill of listening deeply, then gently asking: “How are you experiencing yourself in this feeling?” This timing shifts them from fusion to observation. It reminds them they are still worthy, meaningful, and powerful.

Level 4: Self Emergence

The Crack in the Mirror- The light emerges

The Feeling: “The mask slipped. The mind went quiet. For a heartbeat, I was not the watcher, the performer, or the analyst. I was just… here.”

What is Self Emergence? After years of fusing with society (Level 2) and then the mind (Level 3), something unexpected happens. In a moment of sheer presence—the entire construct collapses. The “I” that was trying to find itself disappears, and what remains is pure, unmediated experience.

This is not an intellectual insight. It is a sensory event. The world feels different. Time dilates. The boundary between “me” and “not-me” dissolves. You don’t think you’re free—you know it. You realize that you have stepped out of the ‘play’.

The SEME (Sensory-Embedded Micro-Event): An original terminology, where you can verify at the subtle level, evidence of the other world. Unlike other paths that promise gradual progress, Self Emergence is a micro-event—a sudden, unrepeatable crack in the illusion. It can happen anywhere: in a shower, during a walk, listening to music, or while staring at the moon.

The system doesn’t create these moments. It creates the conditions where they become possible. And once they happen, nothing is the same.

The Trap: The danger here is trying to recreate the moment. The mind tries to turn the crack into a new identity: “I am the one who had the awakening.” But the moment itself was the point—not the story about it.

The Key Question: “What is it like when you step out of the mind movie & experience the ‘you’ that never needed to be created!”

There is a Crack in Everything, Thats how the Light gets in- Leonard Cohen

True North Posts Relating to Level Four

Self Emergence

Self Emergence is the opposite to immersion. We progressively emerge back to a higher knowing of self and of our sense of quality.......

The Free Self

The Free-self is a word I invented to cover the concept of being free of the ego state and hence the video.....

Subtle State Shifts

One of the reasons that inner experiences receive so little attention against the sledgehammer world of logic, scientific evidence & external objectivity is that they are fleeting, internal & easily forgotten.....

Level 5: The Sacred Frontier

The Known Ends and the Infinite Begins

Beyond the threshold of the known self lies the Sacred Frontier, a vast territory where the boundaries of identity dissolve into the infinite. Here, the rational mind surrenders to the deeper currents of existence, and the journey shifts from discovery to embodiment.

In this realm, three distinct dimensions converge:

The Subtle

The realm of intuition, feeling, and the unseen energies that flow beneath the surface of reality. It is the whisper that guides the step before the foot touches the ground.

 The Supernatural

The domain of the extraordinary, where the laws of the mundane world bend and break. Here, the impossible becomes possible, and the miraculous is revealed not as an exception, but as a natural law of a higher order.

The Sacred

The ultimate ground of being, where the individual self merges with the universal whole. It is the silence at the center of the storm, the presence that underlies all forms.

To step onto the Sacred Frontier is to leave the map behind. It is to trust not in what you can see, but in what you can be. This is the place where the True North is no longer a direction you follow, but a frequency you embody.

The frontier is not “out there.” It is the very depth of your own being, waiting to be realized. Are you ready to cross the threshold?

Coming Home

Life is a succession of lessons that must be lived in order to be understood. (Emerson).....

Bearing Points

Definitively they felt whole and complete. This was a feeling of not just knowing a passing feeling, it was as if from somewhere deeper in their psyche they were informed....

Joint Knowing

You sit quietly waiting on the other person to say what they want, ‘in order’ to see if it is in fact what you were going to say....

Walk With Us

No Gurus. No Fixing. Just Fellow Travellers

I am a former psychologist with 45 years of clinical experience the last 20 years as a psycho-spiritual mentor. I stepped away from the conventions of traditional therapy not because I stopped caring, but because I realized the deepest healing doesn’t come from solving problems—it comes from reconnecting with the internal foundation.

The True North System is not a map I have drawn to lead you. It is a terrain we walk together.

If you find yourself stuck in the noise of Level 1 (Self Immersion) or trapped in the mask of Level 2 (Identity Fusion), I can help you navigate the path forward using the tools of the system and my lifetime of listening.

Or, if you prefer, you might find resonance in our Sacred Frontier Discussion Circle—a monthly gathering for those ready to explore Level 5 not as a destination, but as a shared space of deep conversation and mutual witnessing.

You are not broken. You are just looking for your True North.
