More Than a Nice Feeling: Recognizing the SEME Category: Level 4: Self Emergence / Skills
The Missing Link in Spiritual Growth
We often imagine spiritual breakthroughs as dramatic events: a lightning bolt of insight, a week-long retreat in silence, or a life-altering vision. But for most of us, emergence happens in whispers, not shouts. It happens in the quiet moments we usually dismiss as “just a nice feeling” or “just a pretty view.”
In The True North System, we have a name for these whispers: SEMEs (Sensory-Embedded Micro-Events).
A SEME is not just a random good mood. It is a fleeting, pre-verbal event where your ordinary sense of self briefly expands, and you touch a deeper truth. It is the fundamental building block of Level 4 (Self Emergence). If you miss the SEMEs, you miss one ladder out of the “Mind Fusion” of Level 3.
What Exactly is a SEME?
The term stands for Sensory-Embedded Micro-Event. To count as a SEME (and not just a standard emotion), an experience must pass the SEME Scan. It must meet three non-negotiable conditions:
- The Pre-Verbal Leap: It arrives before you can think about it. You feel it in your body before your mind labels it.
- Boundary Dissolution: For a split second, the wall between “you” and “the world” softens or vanishes. You aren’t just looking at the tree; you are with the tree.
- Deep Recall: It doesn’t feel like learning something new; it feels like remembering something ancient. It feels like coming home.
If an experience lacks these, it’s just a feeling. If it has all three, it’s a portal.
The “Classic SEME”: An Example
The most common type is the Classic SEME, triggered by nature, music, or art. Let’s look at a real-world example to see how it differs from a normal reaction.
The Scenario: You are walking your dog on a familiar path. It’s a Tuesday, you’re thinking about emails (Level 3 Mind Fusion). Suddenly, you turn a corner and the sun breaks through the clouds, hitting a wet river surface. A specific quality of light shimmers on the water.
The Reaction (Level 3 vs. Level 4):
- Level 3 (Mind): “Oh, that’s pretty. Good lighting for a photo.” (The boundary remains; you are the observer, the river is the object. No shift occurs.)
- Level 4 (SEME):
- Pre-Verbal: Your breath catches before you think “river.” Your chest expands physically.
- Boundary Dissolution: For three seconds, there is no “you” watching the “river.” There is just shimmering. The separation dissolves. You are part of the light.
- Deep Recall: A wave of quiet certainty washes over you. It’s not excitement; it’s a deep, quiet knowing. It feels like you’ve been here before, eternally. It feels like Truth.
Then, a car drives by, and the moment breaks. You think, “Wow, that was weird,” and keep walking.
The Trap: Most people dismiss this as “just a nice view.” This is the Amnesia Trap. You felt the Worth and Awe of the universe directly, but because it didn’t last, your mind deletes the data. In the True North System, we say: That was a SEME. The feeling faded, but the Echo (the knowledge that you are connected to the whole) remains.
The SEME Family
While the “Classic SEME” (nature/music) is the most recognized, it is just one member of the family. Once you know what to look for, you’ll see they could happen at any time:
- The Bearing Point: That sudden feeling of inner wholeness (whole & complete) where your internal conflict stops. (Read more in our post: Bearing Points)
- Joint Knowing: That moment in conversation when you and a friend finish each other’s sentences, or know you will or they will-and the boundary between “my mind” and “your mind” disappears. (Read more: Joint Knowing)
- Nostalgia: Not sad missing, but a sudden wave where the past feels present and real, proving that Meaning is timeless. (Coming Soon)
Why This Matters
You cannot “think” your way to Level 5. You have to feel your way there. SEMEs are the cracks in the mirror where the light gets in. They are the evidence that you are more than your body, your social mask, or your busy mind. There is something beyond.
Your Practice This Week: Don’t try to create a SEME. Just spot one. When you hear a song that gives you chills, or see a sky that stops your breath, pause. Ask yourself:
- Did it happen before I thought?
- Did the boundary dissolve?
- Did it feel like remembering?
If yes, acknowledge it: “This is a SEME. I am touching my True North.”
The True North System: The SEME Family
“Sensory” in our model means the Felt Sense of the Human Spirit—any experience that is felt before it is thought.
| SEME Type | The Boundary Dissolved | The “Sensory” Carrier | Primary Core Values Revealed | The “Amnesia” Trap(How the Mind Dismisses It) |
| 1. Classic SEME(Nature, Music, Art) | Self ↔ World(The observer merges with the source) | Auditory / Visual(Sound, Light, Vastness) | Worth, Truth, Awe | “It was just a nice song.”“Just a pretty view.” |
| 2. The Bearing Point (Wholeness) | Fragmented Self ↔ Whole Self(Inner conflict dissolves into One) | Somatic(Deep Relaxation, Expansion, Stillness) | Worth, Meaning, Truth, Awe, Sovereignty | “It was just a nice feeling.”“I was just relaxed.” |
| 3. Joint Knowing(Shared Mind) | My Mind ↔ Your Mind(Separation dissolves into Shared Field) | Kinetic / Relational(Flow, Emergence, Unspoken Sync) | Meaning, Sovereignty, Awe, Love | “We just had a good chat.”“Great chemistry.” |
| 4. Nostalgia (Timeless Value) | Past ↔ Present(Time collapses; value is Now) | Emotional(The Wave, The Sigh, The Tear) | Worth, Meaning, Awe | “That time is gone forever.”“Just missing the past.” |
