Understand your patterns. Develop your freedom.
The True North Mentor Guidance service offers a structured way to explore what happens when feelings, thoughts, images, bodily states, or personal stories begin to take over your awareness.
You may feel overwhelmed by an emotion, trapped in a thought, certain that a story is true, or compelled to act immediately. In those moments, the experience can seem to define who you are or determine what must happen next.
Mentor Guidance helps you notice that process. The aim is not to get rid of feelings, force calm, or solve yourself through analysis. The aim is to discover whether you can experience what is happening without being completely defined or governed by it.
With practice, awareness can return. As awareness returns, inner space and freedom may become available again.
What Mentor Guidance explores
Together, we may explore:
- What is happening in your body right now
- The feelings, images, thoughts, or stories present in your experience
- Whether an experience has begun to feel like your identity
- Whether a thought has become absolute, certain, or threatening
- Whether you are observing an experience or have been taken over by it
- What changes when you notice that the experience is happening within you
- What response fits the situation once greater awareness returns
The work is not about arguing against your experience. It is about learning to recognise how experience affects your awareness, freedom, and choices.
The central movement
The essential movement is:
Notice being taken over → notice awareness returning → notice increased inner space and freedom
You may still feel fear, anger, shame, grief, urgency, or confusion. Progress is not measured simply by feeling better or becoming calm. It is measured by increased awareness and freedom in relation to what you are experiencing.
When awareness returns, you may be better able to decide whether to speak, wait, ask a question, set a boundary, gather information, seek support, or leave a situation temporarily.
How the guidance works
The mentor follows your experience rather than imposing an interpretation.
A session may move through the following process:
Track
Notice changes in breathing, tension, attention, urgency, language, or emotional intensity.
Locate
Notice where the experience is felt in the body.
Name
Use tentative language to identify what may be present: fear, anger, shame, loneliness, helplessness, or something else.
Orient
Return attention to the present situation: where you are, what you can see, and what is happening now.
Differentiate
Separate the bodily sensation, feeling, image, thought, interpretation, identity conclusion, prediction, and actual situation.
Wait
Avoid forcing deeper meaning while the experience is highly activated.
Clarify
When awareness has returned, explore what matters, what is within your control, and what response fits the situation.
This process is flexible. The mentor responds to what is carrying the greatest intensity or causing the greatest loss of freedom at that moment.
The three foundations of the work
Experience
What is happening in your body, feelings, thoughts, images, or personal story?
Fusion
Has the experience begun to feel like your identity, an unquestionable certainty, an immediate danger, or a demand for action?
Intervention
What would best support awareness and freedom right now?
The mentor’s role is to help you recognise this process directly, rather than become dependent on the mentor’s interpretation.
The first three levels
Mentor Guidance mainly explores the first three levels of the True North System.
Level 1: Self Immersion
You may feel completely submerged in emotion or reaction:
“I am angry.”
“I am afraid.”
“I cannot stop this.”
The first movement is to notice that the feeling is happening in you without being the whole of you.
Level 2: Identity Fusion
Your sense of self may become fused with roles, relationships, achievements, beliefs, expectations, or reputation.
You may wonder:
“If I stopped performing this role, who would I be?”
The work is to notice the difference between who you are and the identities or roles you have learned to inhabit.
Level 3: Mind Fusion
Thought, analysis, self-examination, and the search for answers may become another form of entrapment.
You may understand your patterns very well and still feel caught in them.
The work is to notice when thinking has become another experience that takes over awareness, rather than assuming that more analysis will always create freedom.
What Mentor Guidance is not
Mentor Guidance is a personal-development and guided self-exploration service. It is not:
- Diagnosis
- Medical treatment
- Emergency support
- Psychotherapy or counselling
- A promise to remove difficult feelings
- A guarantee of spiritual awakening or transformation
- A substitute for appropriate professional or clinical support
The mentor does not tell you what your experience ultimately means. The purpose is to help you recognise what is happening, recover awareness, and make more deliberate choices.
If you are in immediate danger, experiencing a mental-health emergency, or unable to keep yourself or someone else safe, contact emergency services or an appropriate crisis service in your area.
Is Mentor Guidance right for you?
Mentor Guidance may be appropriate if you want to:
- Understand how you become absorbed in feelings, thoughts, or stories
- Develop a greater capacity to pause and observe
- Recognise the difference between experience and identity
- Respond with more clarity and choice
- Explore recurring patterns without being defined by them
- Develop a more direct understanding of awareness and inner freedom
You do not need to arrive with a particular belief system or spiritual conclusion. The work begins with what you can notice in your own experience.
Begin with a free conversation
You do not need to know your level or understand the whole system before making contact.
A free 30-minute conversation gives us an opportunity to discuss what you are experiencing, clarify where you may fit within the True North System, and consider whether Mentor Guidance is an appropriate next step.
